The Bow Chair is a 2015 dining chair by the Sydney designer Tom Fereday for DesignByThem, named after its arching backrest: back and arms are one continuous bow of solid timber. The picture is from his own post, the chair in natural ash; the dado joins are left in view to celebrate the construction, and the backrest is book matched so the grain mirrors itself.

It is still in production in FSC certified solid timber, made in Sydney, 610 by 528 by 750 millimetres. In 2016 it took a GOOD DESIGN award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. Bow names the collection; the chair itself is the Bow Chair.

Tom Fereday

Tom Fereday is an Australian born designer who grew up in London, studied at the Wimbledon School of Art and took honours in industrial design at the University of Technology Sydney, founding his sole practice in 2012. He works from Camperdown in Sydney. DesignByThem, the brand that makes and sells the chair, was founded in Sydney in 2007 by the industrial designers Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis.
