house A / shop B・Bolts Hardware Store

A hardware shop with a workshop at street level, a café behind and the owners' home above, built in 2016 on a narrow, deep lot in Kamigamo in the north of Kyoto, for Bolts Hardware Store itself. Kimura Matsumoto framed it as a contemporary machiya, the long thin Kyoto townhouse that puts the shop on the street and the living behind and above: a two level glazed front of glass and steel lights the shop and workshop at dusk, with a corrugated metal volume sitting over it. The site is 71 square metres, the floor area 102.
Bolts moved here from its old premises, taking a bigger shop and adding a café run by the owner's wife. The practice publishes the project as house A / shop B・Bolts Hardware Store, and Shinkenchiku-sha ran it in Jutakutokushu, its housing monthly, in January 2017.
