Barnes Woods House

The dining room through the doorway sits where the house's side alleyway used to run: the renovation drew the underused passage into a Victorian terrace in Barnes, London, and set the kitchen and dining room there, looking onto the garden. Fraher took the whole house back to brick and relinked it with a new oak staircase running its full height, finishing in 2023.
The owners had lived mainly in Scandinavia and Switzerland, and their furniture collection steered the design: the staircase, the oak-lined ceilings and the built-in dining seat were all shaped around it, and every piece of fitted furniture was made in the architects' own workshop. Hawksmoor Construction built it, Ūla Maria Studio designed the garden, and Chris Wharton photographed it.
Fraher
Fraher is a London architecture practice begun in 2009, when Joe and Lizzie Fraher took on their first house extension in Islington. Joe is Managing Director and Lizzie Design Director, and the practice designs, builds and makes its joinery in-house.
