Ant-house
Shizuoka, Japan
A house from 2012 for a couple and their three sons, sixty-six square metres inside a windowless cube of dark metal. Past the heavy front door the world flips: an inner gable-roofed room floats within the shell, cut with angled windows and skylights, while a passage lined in larch plywood runs around it carrying the kitchen, a desk and cubbyhole storage.
The white room in the picture is that inner house, left deliberately blank, with no partitions, so sunlight, wind and even insect sound pass through and the family can always see one another. In the architects' words, it looks like a hiding place.
