A Courtyard House

Melbourne

A new house in bayside Melbourne, finished in 2024. The plan is a stretched square loosely divided into a grid of nine, with the middle of each side carved out for a covered entry, two planted courtyards and a paved forecourt, bringing the garden into the house.

Above the living room sits a sawtooth roof, clad in brick to satisfy a covenant on the land and glazed on its eastern faces to light the room below. A sky-blue steel band circles the upper floor, letting it read as floating, and the house was shortlisted in the 2026 Victorian Architecture Awards.

Office MI-JI

A practice led by Millie Anderson and Jimmy Carter, working across architecture and interiors. It began in Melbourne and, in its own words, took shape in London and Chicago.
