3 LINE STITCH 3 SEATER SOFA

Niigata

A three seater sofa by the Niigata workshop ISANA, charcoal cotton canvas cushions in a frame of Hokkaido grown nara, the Japanese oak, with one length of timber run horizontally from the arm right around the back. That rail is the design idea: the maker built this sofa to divide a living area softly from a dining area, so the view from behind had to look as good as the front, which is exactly the view in this photograph.

The name, 3 LINE STITCH 3 SEATER SOFA, comes from the three lines of stitching down each cushion. The fabric is a bio wash finished 100 per cent cotton canvas the maker calls charcoal, though in this photograph it reads closer to slate blue, over chip urethane cushions. Posted in March 2024 as day 917 of the workshop's daily posting run.

ISANA

ISANA is a furniture and textile workshop in Niigata City, Japan, begun in 2011 and run by Masayuki Nakagawa, who designs and makes the furniture and heads its DIY school, and Nagisa Nakagawa, who designs and dyes the textiles and keeps the cafe. The cafe and shop sit in the Nuttari Terrace shopping street in Chuo Ward; the factory and showroom are out in Akiha Ward.
